After mounting problems in the Liverpool defence, the club could look to re-sign Jarell Quansah, who left on a permanent deal to Bayer Leverkusen this summer. But when could the Reds buy him back?

Leaking goals

Last season, the Reds were one of the most defensively sound sides in the Premier League, conceding the second least goals in the top flight and finishing with the most clean sheets. This season, it could not be any different.

Liverpool have achieved just three clean sheets in twelve matches, conceding 20 goals, the joint-fight most in the league.

While a fair bit of blame can be attributed to every single player in the back-line, the biggest drop in form has been suffered by Ibrahima Konate. Coincidentally, the dip comes amid the stalling negotiations to extend his contract, which ends next year.

The Frenchman has made five errors leading to an opponent's shot this season, according to FBref, more than double the next player on the list, Virgil Van Dijk.

These defensive lapses have led to some excruciating results, most recently back-to-back 3-0 defeats to Manchester City and Nottingham Forest, the latter of which have proved to be relegation contenders so far this campaign.

They need help, and they need it fast.

Quansah rejuvenated

While his former club has been stuck in a dogfight, Quansah has been making the most of life in the Bundesliga.

The 22 year-old has started 83% of Leverkusen's matches in all competitions this season, registering five clean sheets and even scoring two goals.

The young talent was rewarded for his club performances with his first England cap last month, playing all 90 minutes of the Three Lions' 2-0 win over Albania.

Most recently, Quansah was part of the Leverkusen defence that came away from the Etihad with an impressive clean sheet, after triumphing over Manchester City 0-2 in the Champions League.

The buy-back clause

The Englishman departed Anfield in a move worth £26 million, with over £4 million in fairly easily achievable bonuses. Crucially, however, there is a buy-back clause in place.

This means that Liverpool can re-sign Quansah for £53 million, a fair fee for a promising defender in today's market, considering that the likes of Wesley Fofana and Leny Yoro cost £70 million and £52 million each respectively.

However, the clause only becomes active in 2027, which means that Liverpool will have to look elsewhere for short-term solutions.

The club are most likely to go back in for Marc Guehi, the 25 year-old centre-back that currently plays for Crystal Palace. According to some reports, Liverpool have made a bid of £25 million, including bonuses, which has been neither accepted nor rejected.

Let's see how this all plays out!
